**Surat Al-Waqi’ah: Reflections and Meanings**


Surat Al-Waqi'ah is one of the Meccan surahs that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, in Mecca. This surah is distinguished by its strong and solemn style, which reflects the horrors of the Day of Resurrection and shows the conditions of the people on that great day.


### **Content of the Surah**


#### **Verses (1-10):**


The surah begins with a depiction of the scene of the Day of Resurrection in poignant and majestic language: “When the event occurs, there is no one lying about it, subduing and lifting up. When the earth shakes with turmoil and the mountains are covered with strength, It was in vain, and you were three pairs.” These verses depict the horrors of the Day of Resurrection and the division of people into three categories: the companions of the right, the companions of the left, and the forerunners.


#### **Verses (11-26):**


The Surah details the punishment prepared for each of these categories. He describes the eternal bliss of the right-wing companions and the forerunners: “And the forerunners, the forerunners, those who are brought near, in the Gardens of Bliss, a few of the first, and a few of the last, on appointed beds.” On the other hand, it describes the severe torment of the companions of the north.


#### **Verses (27-40):**


The surah focuses on the details of the bliss of the right-handed people and the bliss and joy that God has prepared for them, while the following verses highlight the suffering of the left-handed people and the torment they will be exposed to.


#### **Verses (41-56):**


The surah also mentions the evidence of God’s power and greatness in creation, by recalling the creation of man, plants, water, and fire, which makes a person contemplate God’s power, mercy, and justice.


#### **Verses (57-74):**


The surah concludes by affirming God’s ability to resurrect and judge, and urges people to think about God’s creation and greatness: “Have you seen what you tillage? It is you who plant it, or are we the sowers? If We wished, We could make it rubble, and you continue to disintegrate "Easy."

#### **Belief in the Last Day:**


Surah Al-Waqi'ah urges strengthening belief in the Last Day and its horrors, which prompts the Muslim to prepare for this day with good deeds and stay away from sin.


#### **Contemplating God’s creation:**


The surah invites man to contemplate God’s creatures and His great power, which strengthens faith and increases appreciation for God’s blessing upon man.


#### **Fair division:**


The surah explains God's justice in dividing people on the Day of Resurrection based on their deeds, which encourages striving to obey God and avoid His prohibitions.
